When is the Best Time to Schedule Newborn Photos?

When to Schedule Newborn Photos

Are you wondering when to schedule newborn photos? I bet you have no idea how long that ‘newborn’ stage lasts exactly?! Some newborn photographers will put a two week or 15 days age limit on newborn photo sessions. While we strongly suggest holding your newborn shoot at the 5-10 day mark, I say there’s no reason why you can’t have a baby’s newborn photoshoot up to around three or four weeks old. It’s never too late! Plus, life gets in the way. You may have had a bit of a stay in the hospital after birth, and having a new baby at home is exhausting. Scheduling a session with a photographer may not sound enticing right away.

Fear not! Read on for my tips on the best age to have a newborn shoot. Plus how to book one when you have no idea what date the baby will arrive. (Because isn’t that exactly how it goes? haha) Let me put your mind at rest at how easy it is to have beautiful new family memories captured that will last a lifetime. Most parents really enjoy the experience, and it’s much more relaxing and stress-free than you might think!

Babies Younger Than Two Weeks Old (When Possible!)

You should try to schedule newborn photos typically around two weeks after your due date. The most ideal time is between 5-10 days old. Babies at this age tend to be pretty chilled, curled up and sleepy, making posing easier!

This age is great for capturing all those gorgeous curled-up sleeping shots, snuggles with parents, photos of baby feeding (if you want them) and close up shots of baby’s eyelashes, lips, and feet. This is also a great time to capture some beautiful photos of the baby with their siblings. The baby may not be actively smiling yet, but at even the earliest newborn photoshoots we can capture a few adorable grins.

According to data, only 5% of newborns arrive on their actual due date. Around a third of the rest arrive early, and about two-thirds arrive past the date. So it’s a pretty safe bet, with a first baby at least, that your little one won’t be in any huge rush to come out on time! So two weeks after your due date tends to work pretty well as a tentative date for your booking. If the timing is just a little off, no worries. Most newborn photographers are happy to work with you to schedule a better time. We completely understand that the baby comes when they are ready and it’s not always easy to predict.

newborn photos

A quick note…

If you’re looking for those adorable curled up in a basket/hammock/bucket or posed like a frog photo for your newborn photoshoot, the ideal age is more like 5-10 days and rarely older. This style of newborn photography tends to be more about posed shots of the baby. These poses can only be achieved before the baby’s tiny bones fuse together and they’re still really curled up and ‘malleable’!

Newborn Photos with Older Babies Age

Babies older than two weeks are not quite so curled up and weeny any more! They also start to lose some of that gorgeous wrinkly skin and downy hair. Around 2-3 weeks old baby acne can begin to appear and cradle cap is common from 1-2 months old. Some parents don’t mind these small blemishes, however. Baby is still perfect in every way. Because of this many parents and photographers think this is not when to schedule newborn photos.

Every baby is unique and it is more than possible for a GOOD newborn photographer to get amazing shots of your new baby at 3-4 weeks old. No matter when you get around to it, a photo session with your new baby is always a great idea! But if you can it’s best to get a few shots of your little one captured because they grow quickly. The newborn stage passes by in the blink of an eye.

Slightly older babies are likely to be more alert and aware of their surroundings. So photo sessions with older babies can result in more ‘eyes open’ shots than sleepy ones. Who doesn’t love a bright-eyed, curious baby? You’re also more likely to capture those sweet little grins.

C-section Births

Having a c-section birth can be both a positive and a negative. On the plus side, you may know exactly when you’re scheduled making it easier to plan for a newborn photos. On the other hand, if you weren’t prepared you may have feelings of deflation. Or, you may be worried that your photographer asks you to move around when you’re not ready to or to hold the newborn in a position that’s not comfortable for you. Our photo sessions, however, are flexible. We understand that the baby’s comfort comes first with mom and dad being a close second. We can capture memorable shots of you with your baby in whatever position is comfortable for you, whether sitting, propped up on pillows or standing.

Most parents are happy for me to move the baby around for photos myself, meaning that for shots of the baby on their own you can just sit back with a cup of tea and watch the magic happen! 😉 We work in pairs so the shooter is always free to position the camera while our assistant is there to be helpful with the newborn.

If you feel you’d like to wait a bit after having a c-section, by all means, wait. Once again your comfort is most important.

Premature Births

If your baby came well before the anticipated due date it’s safer and better to wait until closer to their “adjusted age”. Premature babies are more delicate and need a bit more time to be ready for things such as photoshoots.

Best Age for a Newborn Photos

So, when to schedule newborn photos then? When possible I recommend scheduling a session before the baby is two weeks old, to capture him o/her in all their wrinkly and scrunched-up newness. I’d also recommend scheduling sessions throughout that first year about once a quarter (3, 6, 9, and 12 months old) to capture the growth and change in your child.

In fact, we’ll work with you to create a custom FIRST YEAR Package that will allow you to schedule those photo sessions in advance with a discount in price.

SEVEN Tips for the Best Newborn Photography Session

SEVEN Tips for the Best Newborn Photography Session

Sit Still: Newborn Photography Tips

During the first six months of life, average newborns grow at a rate of about a half to one full inch per month. Almost every day they appear different as they put on weight and outgrow each little stage of being.

For this reason, you should get in your newborn photos as soon as possible to capture them in all their newness. Photo sessions with little ones pose obvious challenges as they do not always cooperate the way we want them to.

This absolutely does not mean that you should forgo the photo op. Follow these seven newborn photography session tips that will help you get the perfect picture.

newborn photography

Mom & Dad taking part of the newborn photograpy session preserves these fleeting moments.

1. Book Early On

Schedule your newborn photography session prior to giving birth. This will ensure that your photographer is available when you need them. Try to make your session right before or at the baby’s two-week mark. This allows you time to adjust to bringing your new family member home.

Not only will you make sure to get them tiny and new at this point, but they will most likely make the photo session easy. At this age, newborns mostly sleep. A sleeping baby makes for a precious photograph. It also allows you to indulge in capturing just about any adorable pose you can think of.

A professional photographer can also advise you on When to schedule newborn photography so baby is sleepy and flexible.

2. Schedule Around Naptime

While you need to book your appointment early on, see if your photographer can wait until your little one comes into the world to solidify the time. After the first few days, you should get a feel of when your baby sleeps.

Adjusting to their schedule will work much better than making them adhere to yours. This is one of the best tips for newborn photography.

newborn photography

3. Diaper Them Prior

Nobody feels comfy with a wet bottom. Make sure your baby has a fresh diaper for the photoshoot. Also make sure you leave it very loose this will keep the marks and red lines from the diaper appearing in the newborn photography.

Change them about a half-hour prior to the session. If they dirty the diaper again, then simply clean them up. If you try to save time by keeping them in a dirty diaper, you may not get the results you want.

4. Have a Backup Plan

Many parents go into a photoshoot with a very specific plan. Pencil those plans in and leave room for adaptations. Prepare for anything that can go wrong to happen. Bring extra diapers and outfits in case of a blowout or spit-up situation. This will keep them comfortable and cute for the pictures. Also, know that they may not cooperate for the exact picture you wanted. Stay open for alternative pictures during your newborn photography session.

newborn photography

5. Practice That Cute Pose

If you think of a picture-perfect position for your little one, test it out ahead of time. See whether or not they find comfort in the pose before you get disappointed during your newborn photography.

If you absolutely want something specific, try putting them in that position often during the days leading up to your session. This will get them used to it’s it feels comforting to them.

6. Use Practical Props Creatively

When choosing props, think in terms of practicality. What will make your baby most comfortable so they enjoy the session or sleep through it?

Swaddle them up in a blanket so they feel secure. Try keeping one of mom’s shirts close by for comfort during newborn photography. Babies have a terrific sense of smell.

newborn photography
newborn photography

7. Feed Your Baby

Try to feed your baby on-site, right before your session begins. This will make it less likely that they will get hungry and cranky while your newborn photographer works their magic. Feeding infants milk releases a hormone called cholecystokinin. This causes drowsiness, making them much more likely to sleep through getting photographed. What if they still get hungry again? Simply feed them. Come completely prepared with anything you may need, like an extra bottle or a nursing cover.

 Remember Your Newborn Photography Tips

Bringing a new baby home can create a little bit of chaos at first. Make sure you review your newborn photography tips ahead of time so that you properly plan and prepare for your session. As long as you prepare, let the baby lead, and remain flexible, you will leave with unforgettable keepsakes.

How Much is a Maternity Photographer Near Me?

How Much is a Maternity Photographer Near Me?

How Much is a Maternity Photographer Near Me?

When asking how much a Maternity Photographer Near Me is, there are a few thing to consider. Every photographer is different and every area of the country is different. In larger city areas photography costs more just because the cost of living is higher. But in rural areas photography can be far less expensive…for the same reason. However, in a larger city environment you will have more photographers near me to select from, but in rural areas the selection will be more limited. So that can also slightly effect the cost. It’s the law of supply and demand. The best start to figuring out a reasonable cost is to begin with what the photographer offers and their experience level.

Not sure you’re ready or want to book a Professional Maternity Photographer near me? Check out these reasons Why You Need a Maternity Photography Session!

How Much Experience Does the Maternity Photographer Have?

The first thing to consider when looking for a maternity photographer near me is how much experience they have. A beginner photographer is going to offer entry level service, but they’re also going to be the cheapest. They won’t have the best photo gear or much experience posing an expecting mom. They also don’t offer much editing because they’re still learning. They may not edit at all. They typically have no previous experience to about 2-3 years of shoot time.

A more skilled maternity photographer will have better photo gear and understand how to shoot artistically. They will have more knowledge about lighting and posing to make you look better in your maternity portraits. They will, of course, cost a little more than a beginner because of the investment they have put in themselves and their camera equipment. They typically have 3-5 years experience capturing maternity images.

Finally, you will find very advanced and highly skilled photographers who have been working for decades as a photographer. They have done enough maternity photography sessions to have experienced it all. They will have invested in the best gear available and have full knowledge of how to use that equipment to get the best artistic quality images for you. They will also charge the most because they have invested so much into perfecting their craft.

What is the Maternity Photographer Near Me Offering in their pricing?

Funny enough, their seems to be a swing in what you get (physical prints, albums, or digitals) versus how much experience the photographer has.

To begin, the amatuer who is just starting their career or is just doing it more as a hobbyist for fun is not as invested in protecting their artwork or being recognized for their craft. They are usually willing to just give away the full rights to their images in the form of digital files. I’ve heard stories of lower cost photographers literally taking the SD card out of the camera in front of the client transferring all the photos to a thumb drive and handing them over. RED FLAG: none of these images were editing and you may be getting really low quality work. But, they aren’t as invested in themselves and you paid up, so who cares?

Let’s go back to that middle ground maternity photographer near me. They’ve taken some time to invest in higher end camera gear. They’ve probably taken a few photography classes or shadowed a pro to gain experience. They’ve learned some useful editing techniques. They are a little more reserved and protective of their investment and reputation. Most will give you a portion of the digital files and maybe some prints. However, the digitals typically retain a studio logo as they are trying to build a career and need to prove their worth. They also usually research the average costs of doing business and try to earn a living so they’ll charge pretty fair rates.

Lastly, is the most experienced professional maternity photographer. They have invested a lot of time and money into themselves and their career. Many won’t even consider offering digital images because they feel it cheapens their worth. In addtion, a large percentage of these higher end professionals operate a “Boutique Experience” Photography Studio. That means they charge separately for their session (think old time sitting) fee and the images. You will be charged for them to capture and edit your images, but you will have to buy anything you want after the fact.

After you figure out how much this is all going to cost you need to know When Is the Best Time to Book Your Maternity Photography Session. And then, you’ll maybe want some help deciding where to have it. Check out our list of 5 Best Maternity Picture Location Ideas in Erie Pa.

The Best Tips on When to Book Your Maternity Photography Session

The Best Tips on When to Book Your Maternity Photography Session

When Should You Book Maternity Photography?

When it comes to maternity photography, timing is everything. The best time for maternity photography is generally considered to be around 28-35 weeks, when the bump is starting to show and the skin is still relatively smooth. By this point, the mother-to-be should also feel comfortable in her new role and be able to enjoy the experience of having her photograph taken. There are several reasons why we suggest a Maternity Session during this time. While most of these are in general, each mother’s journey is unique.

Your third trimester begins at 27 weeks. And for most women that’s when you really feel good. You get a ton of energy back and you’re really glowing. In addition, early in your third trimester you can still move easily. Feeling good and moving to pose easily are 2 main reasons it’s a great idea for maternity photography during the earlier weeks of this stage of pregnancy. Any professional photographer is going to understand that you’re still carrying an adorable bowling ball in your belly and won’t ask you to get into awkward positions you can’t get out of. However, still being limber enough to twist and turn a bit to really highlight the best parts of you is key to a killer session.

5 Amazing Location Ideas for Your Maternity Photo Shoot

5 Amazing Location Ideas for Your Maternity Photo Shoot

5 Top Maternity Photo Shoot Location Ideas

Maternity photography is a popular way to capture the beauty of expecting mothers. As you plan your maternity photo shoot, you may be wondering where is the best location to capture these special memories? It’s first important to consider Why You NEED a Maternity Photo Shoot!  That’s because the time of year may affect your final decision. But, here are five great locations for your maternity photo shoot to get you inspired!

Maternity Photo Shoot

1. The Beach or Lakefront Maternity Photo Shoot

This is almost a no-brainer for those of us living in Erie, Ashtabula, or Chautauqua Counties on Lake Erie. The lake is a huge focal point of our lives. It’s the backdrop of so many moments day to day.

The shoreline is the perfect location during any season as well. During every season there are gorgeous sunsets over the water. In the summer you can go barefoot in the sand. In the fall find a lake cliff sprinkled with vivid leaves. In the winter the frozen lake looks mysterious and awe inspiring. Finally, in the spring life is blooming all around the water with soft petals and butterflies. Just remember that no matter which season you shoot in to dress appropriately for the weather. The fall and winter seasons on the lake are windy and chilly. And in the summer the sun can be harsh.

No matter what season you take, schedule your Maternity Photo Shoot. The lake is an ideal setting for you. It’s one of our favorite locations to shoot at and that’s why I listed it first.

A professional photographer can also advise you on When to Take Maternity Photos so your belly is at its roundest.

2. A Park or Arboretum Maternity Photo Shoot

I say Park and I know you Erie-ites think Frontier Park. Heck, I say Arboretum and you think Frontier Park. If you’re like me this park is a monumental part of your childhood. My school used to walk us over there weekly for activities and study. And, it is such an ideal place for a maternity photo shoot. It’s one of the most popular photography places in Erie County. With lush sprawling lawns, a creek, and gorgeous trees it’s beautiful every season.

Frontier Park isn’t the only outdoor park area that has a beautiful backdrop. Consider Asbury Woods where we took the image adjacent to this. Fields of wildflowers were so awe-inspiring. We loved it so much after this maternity photo shoot that we returned for some family photos later on.

Another hidden gem is McClelland Park in the Wesleyville area. While Frontier & Asbury are popular locations that may be crowded, McClelland is hidden away not far off of 38th Street. It’s perfect for some quiet moments. And you may meet a few friendly puppies.

Maternity Photo Shoot

3. A Maternity Photo Shoot at your Wedding Venue

I know this one will make you sit up and take notice. But this is one of the most unique places for a maternity photo shoot that I can think of. I’d like to say I came up with it on my own, but I’m not sure.

However, if you chose any of the amazing local venues we have near us you’d be amiss to skip this opportunity. Venues like Majestic Woods, Mound Grove, Lakeshore Vineyards, Quincy Cellars, and Whispering Trees all have breathtaking backdrops for a maternity photo shoot. In addition, you’ll be documenting your journey together in a place that’s embedded in your story.

The most important thing to remember when planning your maternity photo shoot at your wedding venue is that you need permission from the owners. You’ll have to verify that they don’t have any events booked the day you’d like to shoot. Also, for insurance reasons many venues do have a small fee associated with photo shoots happening on their property. This helps protect you in case of injury or accident while at their location. It’s always best to be respectful and ask.

4. A Homestead Maternity Photo Shoot

What better way to capture this magical part of your journey than with a Lifestyle Maternity Photo Shoot. A lifestyle shoot basically means ‘captured in real life’. Invite your photographer into your home to capture you putting the nursery together. Imagine the memories you’ll be able to look back on. Your family will cherish being able to peer into this intimate and beautiful bonding time. In addition, years later you can share how much you already loved your child by going through these images together.

Another reason a ‘Homestead’ Session is great, is that you’re completely comfortable in your own surroundings. There is no time period that you have to settle into a location you don’t normally spend time in. And most of us love our homes. We’ve decorated it the way we want and it expresses who we are elegantly. It’s one of the best ways to freeze this moment in time and preserve it for future generations. I highly suggest this type of shoot if you’re introverted or uncomfortable in a public location so you can better enjoy your session.

Maternity Session

4. A Portrait Studio Maternity Photo Shoot

I decided to include this option because I’ve had a few brides tell me “I’m an indoor girl.” when we’ve planned their engagement and wedding photos. It makes sense to me that not everyone relishes spending time outside. And, if you’re not an outdoor enthusiast it would be odd for you to capture your milestone moments outside.

There is nothing wrong with an indoor or studio Maternity Photo Shoot. In fact, there can be some perks! In the photo adjacent we were able to set a light up behind the backdrop to create a neat lighting effect to show off this mom-to-be’s belly. We would never have been able to pull this shot off outdoors. But being inside a studio allowed us to use tools not available at a location shoot.

Studio Maternity Photos Shoots may be more Editorial in style. That means you’ll look and feel more like a supermodel with a polished, sharp look than an outdoor session. In addition, many studios provide a selection of indoor backdrops, props, and sometimes even outfits you can use for your photos.

FIVE Best Reasons you NEED Maternity Photos

FIVE Best Reasons you NEED Maternity Photos

5 Reasons You NEED Maternity Photos

When you’re pregnant, it feels like everyone is telling you what to do. You should eat this, not eat that. You should sleep on your left side, drink lots of water, and avoid any kind of stress. While all of these guidelines are important, it can be hard to remember to take time for yourself. That’s why maternity photos are so important. They give you a chance to celebrate your pregnancy and capture this special time in your life. Here are 5 Top Reasons you need to take Maternity Photos during this special time in your life.

Maternity Photos

1. To Capture the Beauty of Your Belly

Capturing the beauty of your pregnant belly is probably the number one reason women take maternity photos. Your body is changing and growing in ways that you didn’t realize was possible. And, while you’ll never be quite the same again after this experience, that baby belly is gone quickly. I know it’s hard to imagine, but trust me you won’t have this round belly forever. I know it feels like you will.

Let’s be honest with each other. We don’t always feel like this round baby belly is beautiful. It’s especially hard to appreciate when your favorite jeans don’t fit. However, that’s why professional maternity photos are so important to your journey into motherhood. A professional maternity photographer knows how to pose you and your partner to make you look stunning even if you don’t feel it.

A professional photographer can also advise you on When to Take Maternity Photos so your belly is at its roundest.

2. To Preserve This Fleeting Time

They say you won’t remember the aches and pains of pregnancy and childbirth. I’m not believe them. I seem to remember a lot. Oh, who am I kidding. There are HUGE chunks of my life missing from lack of sleep. That’s another reason to have maternity photos taken. You’re going to have an unforgettable record of your pregnancy journey.

Trusting a professional photographer to document that journey is the key. Going back to our reason before. This is a time in your life when you’re already feeling tired and a bit unsure about life. Having a pro who understands how to make maternity photos fun while also making you look amazing is such a huge mood booster!

I look back on photos of myself that friends and family took on cell phones and disposable cameras. I don’t think I look my best. However, when I look at the photos that I primped for, taken by a pro I can smile and enjoy the memories. It’s something I’ll never regret.

3. To Create Emotional Memories

Next, we’re revisiting what we mentioned in the previous reason. Creating lasting memories. Trust me when I say that these moments are fleeting. That being said, maternity photos are essential to preserving your memories.

Maternity Photos do so much more than capture a smile or baby bump. They paint a picture into how you felt. I know I mentioned some of the negatives about pregnancy before. But man oh man, you’ve got this miracle inside of you! You can admit that every once in a while you catch your breath when you think about it. These are feelings of awe and wonder that you don’t want to let slip by. The baby’s gentle kick or flutters that you feel. Those tender moments of love between the two of you. That’s what maternity photos are really all about. Capturing the feelings of this time before the busyness of caring for a newborn comes along. It doesn’t slow down or stop once the baby is in your arms. Freeze this moment of time while you can.

4. To Share Moments with Loved Ones

If you’re anything like me, you’re bursting at the seams to share your big news with everyone you care about. Maternity Photos are perfect for making that announcement. I adore seeing my friends’ pregnancy announcements on social media. I really enjoy it when I can tell they had an amazing photo session with a professional who made them look their best.

Those excited smiles and wondering glances are such a great way to warm the hearts of your loved ones. In addition, you’ll be getting them extra stoked for the birth of your little one as well. Every doting grandparent wants photos to show off to their friends. (I’m going to age myself here, but my own son’s maternity photos are in the mix!) I speak from experience of course.

Maternity Photos are great for cards, emails, social media, and always…prints for the wall. Share the joy and wonder with everyone you love.

5. To Share With the Future

When I say Maternity Photos document your journey for generations I’m thinking mostly of your children and grandchildren. If this is your first pregnancy you may not know what I mean. But, if this isn’t your first blessing you understand. Kids LOVE to hear about themselves! I have sat down with each of my kids, rapt attention and gone over my journey to becoming a mom. It pulls my heartstrings thinking of their wide innocent eyes exclaiming: That’s me in your belly?

If I’m being honest with you, I did it to my own mom as a teenager. I’m not joking. I came across an old photo of my mom pregnant with me. It was so magical to think that it was before my mom met me but she was already in love with me.

Documenting these precious moments to share with your curious child is so important. And, if you’re really lucky you’ll be sharing them with THEIR children in a few years. One day your grandchildren will be in awe and wonder realizing that’s their parent in your belly!
