what to wear for senior pictures

Tip #1- Match Your Personality

When you’re picking what to wear for senior pictures the first thing to remember is how awesome and unique you are. Your outfit should match your own personality and style. You’ll also want to wear clothing that is comfortable to you.

Tip #2- Dress for the Season

Try to stick to colors that work with the season. If it is winter time, stick to warm clothes so you will be comfortable during your session. The same goes for the hot summer days. Keep in mind if you’re going to be inside or outside too.

Tip #3- Don’t Go With What’s Trendy

Just because something is in style and trendy doesn’t mean it’s going to look great in pictures. You need outfits you can move around in and pose well in. The clothing item I’ve found that causes the most uncomfortable wardrobe malfunctions during sessions is the short romper.

Tip #4- Bring Options

When talking to students about what to wear for senior pictures I always suggest bringing along several outfits. That way you have a choice on what to wear depending on what the location looks like. You don’t want to be stuck blending into the background.

Tip #5- Monochromatic Outfit

I often ask students to bring along at least one monochromatic outfit to a session because those photograph well. However, you want to pick shades of color that add some depth so you don’t look like a crayola crayon escaped the box.

Tip #6- Be Quirky

This tip on what to wear for senior pictures goes back to Tip #1. Be as quirky as you are in real life. This will make your photos memorable and touching. Your parents will really appreciate your personality being captured like this. Trust me.

Tip #7- Be Yourself

Here we are right back to the basics while you’re figuring out what to wear for senior pictures. Be yourself means don’t push yourself to act outgoing if you’re not. The more you let yourself relax and be yourself the more fun you’ll have and the better your pictures will turn out.

Tip #8- Get Fancy

While I recommend wearing clothing that expresses who you are and matches your personality, you’ll also want to bring along at least one outfit that is a bit more ‘special’ for your portraits. Dress up a little and have fun with it.

Tip #9- Solid Colors

I love solid colors for photos. Prints don’t always stand the test of time or photograph well. There are some exceptions, but the safest bet is to wear outfits in solid colors. I learned this from making the mistake to wear unflattering stripes during my own photo session.

Tip #10- Use Props

I definitely encourage you to think about props when you’re planning on what to wear for senior pictures. Bring items that help tell the story of who you are. Hobbies, sports, clubs, anything that tells the story of you. We want to capture your personality.

Tip #11- Add Depth and Flair

It’s not just about what to wear for senior pictures. Think props…outside of the normal realm. We did a great senior shoot last year during a car show. The sleek, shiny, antique cars in the background were amazing.

Tip #12- Wear a Tank Top

Wearing a tank top under your outfits makes it super easy to change in between so you don’t lose any time that could be spent capturing your outstanding smile and personality. Pick a color that won’t bleed through your outfit, however.

What NOT to Wear For Senior Pictures?

I know we’ve talked a lot about what you SHOULD wear for senior pictures. But I’d like to close with a few tips on what NOT to wear. Don’t buy a brand new outfit and wait until the day of your shoot to try it out. That’s where terrible wardrobe malfunctions happen and you leave feeling embarrassed. Don’t wear too much white. It’s hard to photograph and the colors don’t show well. Also, don’t wear neon colors. Those don’t photograph well and don’t stay true to color in photos. In addition, if you don’t love it, don’t wear it. Let me repeat. If you don’t love it, don’t wear it. I promise you, the pictures will show what outfits you loved and which ones you could have left at home.

what to wear for senior pictures

In conclusion, senior picture day is a once in a lifetime event and should be celebrated. With these tips, you can feel confident and prepared to create memories that will last a lifetime! Don’t forget to have fun with your outfit choices and take the opportunity to express yourself. Remember, senior pictures are an amazing way to capture this moment in time and remember it forever. So don’t be afraid to get creative and have some fun with your wardrobe selections!

Best Places to Take Senior Pictures

Are you wondering where to take your Senior Pictures in Erie, Pa? We’ve got some pretty awesome ideas to get you started! But first, CONGRATS! Finishing high school is one of life’s biggest (and most rewarding) achievements. It’s what we adults like to call “A MILESTONE” in your life. You’re going to look back on this time in your life with joy. Trust me. I’m..well…I’m old enough to have my own kids that have graduated high school and I still look back on my senior year with a smile. Get ready with our How To Prepare For Your Senior Photo Tip list.

Not sure you’re ready or want to book a Professional Maternity Photographer near me? Check out these reasons Why You NEED Senior Pictures!

Let’s Talk About Senior Pictures

Before we get into where to take your Senior Pictures we’re going to have to talk about WHAT Senior Pictures are. I’ll just be honest with you. My side hustle is working in a local high school. (And yeah, most of the students in this blog are fantastic kids I see everyday.) I noticed most juniors and seniors don’t quite get what a Professional Senior Portrait Session is. Let me clue you in. It’s not the cheesy photo your school makes you get in front of that ugly grey backdrop. I’m shuddering thinking about those. A Senior Photo Session is a private 1-2 hour long session at a location of YOUR choice, wearing clothes YOU picked out that captures who YOU really are.

Of course, your school will offer you the typical picture package where your entire class lines up in a hot auditorium or gym waiting in line forever. You’ll also get those advertisements from expensive portrait studios inviting you to come in and spend hundreds of dollars in their run of the mill scenery. But, you’re not limited to those options. Neither one of these options is really going to bring out YOUR unique personality.

Instead, you should go with a free lance pro who will travel to a location you’ve selected. A freelance photographer will work with you to create the experience you want to capture in your gallery. You’ll feel more comfortable and your photos will look more realistic when you have control over the shoot place. Our team is excited to share some of our favorite locations with you. We hope it helps you to pick the perfect spot. When you’re done looking them over, shoot us an email or call to set up your senior picture session!!

Where Do I Take My Senior Pictures?

And now that we’ve talked about what Senior Portraits are and how they are really different from what your school is offering you, let’s talk about some of the great places we’ve met up to take these photos. We’ll give you the skinny on really popular places and some you may have never thought of.

The Beach/Waterfront

Because we live right on one of the Great Lakes, the Beach/Waterfront is one of the most popular spots to take your senior photos in Erie, Pa. We’re lucky because we have more than one ideal spot for beach style photos. Along the coast in Erie County our beach experience runs from amazing cliffs overlooking the waterfront to long and winding paths on Presque Isle chocked full of wildlife and interesting buildings like Lighthouses. You can even take an urban twist on the waterfront photos by choosing Dobbins Landing or the East Pier, with a view of the Coast Guard Station in the background. The hardest part of taking your beach/waterfront photos will be selecting the spot that you love the most. If you’re feeling very adventurous consider taking your photographer ‘out to sea’ by sailing away into the bay or shooting at the historic Brig Niagara or pretend you’re a pirate aboard the Scallywag!!!

No matter which beach/waterfront location you choose, the vast open waterway makes a perfect backdrop to tell your story. The water represents the amazing & exciting future that lies in front of you. You’ll be embarking on the grandest adventure of your lifetime!

senior pictures

College Campus

If you’re sticking close to home  this would be a great place to take your Senior Pictures in Erie, PA!! Make your senior photos a fun announcement by touring your college campus. Taking pictures in the place you plan on spending most of the next 4 years can really help you out. And it’s a great way to tell your ongoing story to family and friends. Get comfortable with the benches you’ll be studying on. Visit the library (quietly) that you’ll be researching in. If you’re going to be playing sports, maybe visit the field you’ll be bonding with other players on.

The Erie area has at least 6 liberal arts college campuses and many other vocational schools to brag about. Even if you’re not going to attend one of the local colleges the campuses are still pretty amazing for photo opportunities. Mercyhurst Main & North East Campus have towering stone buildings. Gannon is located in bustling downtown Erie. Penn State Behrend has gorgeous nature trails. Edinboro Porreco Center has a hidden apple orchard and big red barns. A local college campus is definitely a must on this list.

Downtown/Urban Area

Where to take Senior Pictures can be fun if you meet up in the downtown or an urban area full of street signs, little shops, and lots of lights. We’ve all spent time wandering through our neighborhoods just hanging out so why not capture your photos in a location you spent a lot of time in? Downtown Erie has railroad underpasses, old staircases, street lights, graffiti, and cute coffee shops you can use as background props.

Living in North East, PA we take a lot of photos for the local high school seniors. Our town is like many other small towns. We’ve got old brick buildings, store fronts, parks, and lots of hustle and bustle. All of these things help tell the story of who you are. The town you grew up in helped to shape you into the person you are now. You should celebrate your past as you embark on a thrilling new adventure.

So, if you’re from Girard, Harborcreek, Fairview, Wattsburg, or Green Township there are plenty of little places for you to take some fun senior photos in an urban setting. If you’re not sure where to start, think about what you did as a kid that excited you. Maybe visit the corner store and grab a bag of penny candy for your shoot. Your photographer will have some fun ideas as well.

senior pictures

Parks/Frontier Park

Frontier Park in Erie, Pa may be one of the most iconic places to take your Senior Pictures. How many of us visited the park as kids? Did you stroll down the path through the trees or swing like a monkey on the playground? Have you explored the creek with its huge willow trees? This park is full of trails, trees, wide open spaces and park benches. When I was a kid our Science and Gym classes would walk over to Frontier Park to explore during school time.

Even if you didn’t grow up near Frontier Park, there are so many cute parks to take senior pictures in around Erie, Pa. We meet students from North East High School all the time in Heard Park. No matter where you are, there’s a sweet little park full of benches, swings, slides, and gorgeous green grass just waiting for you.

When picking a park location make sure there aren’t any entrance fees to get in. No sense in paying extra for the scenery when there are so many free options in Erie County. If you need help deciding where to go, there’s a good chance your photographer can make some suggestions.

Erie Zoo/Museums

You may not have considered The Erie Zoo as an ideal spot for taking your Senior Photos in Erie, Pa, but really is there a more iconic place in Erie that better represents everything you loved as a child? Everyone got excited to take a trip to the zoo and visit with the monkeys, elephants, giraffes, and lions. Every visit was made special with popcorn and a slush puppy from the Concession Stand. You couldn’t wait to ride the train and check out the water buffalo. The children’s zoo was an area of mystery, excitement and thrill. Who didn’t love watching the adorable penguins waddle around with each other?

The Erie Zoo is full of wonderful little spots to take your photos in if you’re feeling adventurous. The African Safari is by far the best spot in the zoo with its natural wood fences, grass roofs, and plenty of park benches. Hop aboard the train in the children’s zoo area or play on the musical pads like you did when you were 7! Those candid photos will really bring out your personality and be sure to make your parents and grandparents happy while making your friends giggle. Grab a cotton candy or popcorn and walk about the park to your favorite animal.

Getting Ready for Senior Portrait Photography

Getting Ready for Senior Portrait Photography

How to Get Ready for Senior Portrait Photography

Senior year is an exciting time for any high-schooler. With the prospect of early adulthood in front of you and your childhood behind, you truly feel as though you’re standing on a precipice. But it means so much more than moving on to things beyond.

There are a lot of things that happen senior year, too! In addition to student-made trends like first-last day photos, decorating lockers, and social media comparisons to your younger self, there are also timeless traditions like homecoming and prom.

And then, there’s the high school senior portrait session.

With all that’s going on senior year, you might have thought much about high school senior portrait photography. However, the fact of the matter is, your high school senior portrait will wind up in your yearbook.

Whether you’re a traditional high school lover or a teenage rebel, you’re going to want to have a nice picture to look at years later and remember this time in your life.

But what do you do? How do you plan for your senior year portrait? What are you supposed to wear?

A senior year already presents you with enough questions. The last thing you want to stress out about is your high school portrait. This article will walk you through all you need to know about your senior photoshoot.

Not sure you’re ready or want to book a Professional Maternity Photographer near me? Check out these reasons Why You NEED Senior Pictures!

What to Wear: High School Senior Picture Outfits

Before we get into any clever high school senior portrait photography ideas, you probably have one burning question — what should I wear? We can’t blame you; clothing is one of the most important aspects of portraiture photography, so we’ll cover it first.

The rule of thumb for senior portrait photography is to think of the nicest outfit you’d wear to something you’d consider a “casual” occasion. You don’t want to dress too casually, because you won’t look your best in the picture. You don’t want to dress too formally, or you’ll lose the individuality and energy that makes you, you.

So think of your favorite outfit to wear on occasions that are “casual”. What would you wear on your first day of school? What would you wear on a casual date to the movies?

Popular options include unique rompers, casual dresses, jeans and a button-down, and henleys. If you have a signature piece of jewelry or wear your hair a certain way, be sure to bring it to the photography section.

Our senior year photography shoots allow you to make up to two outfit changes, so you can bring up to three distinct outfits and see what works best. The location, lighting, and general mood of the day may change the clothing that works best for you.

Be comfortable at your Senior Photography Session by following these Amazing Maternity Picture Outfit Ideas.

Time of Day: When to get Senior Portrait Photography

As you’ve probably guessed by now, most senior photographs are taken outside. Natural lighting is key in making your senior photograph shine. You don’t want that bland, washed-out look of the paint-by-numbers photos that the schools take for you.

Plan your time of day with your photographer based on your location, outfit, and personality. A good photographer should be able to make any lighting beautiful, so don’t worry about picking the “wrong” time for the photographer’s sake. Instead, think about which time of day will make you look best, as lighting can drastically change the way your face looks.

Some of the most distinct times for senior year photographs are the morning before the sun has reached its peak, and the golden hour right before sundown. These times of day are cool and comfortable and provide many interesting options for shadows and lighting.

The way your face looks can also be influenced by your pose.

senior portrait photography

Posing: High School Senior Portrait Photography Poses

The importance of a good pose goes beyond just figuring out a way to stand or sit. There’s a whole level of psychology that goes into the way you position yourself, and what you look like.

If there’s something to sit on in your location, sitting can be a wonderful option. Sitting is comfortable, and a sense of relaxation is important to getting quality pictures. It also allows you to bend at the waist and lean forward if you want.

If there’s something to lean on, that can be a good option, too. Leaning creates a distinct, angular look that will surely turn heads and make the picture memorable.

You can also get a lot of mileage out of the types of poses that you see models do. If you want, you can go for the over-the-shoulder photo from behind, or the hand on the waist.

It’s also important to remember that your photographer will be well versed in many different sorts of model poses. If you can’t think of those ideas, don’t fret too much.

Miscellaneous Tips

When you’re going to a photography session, remember that you’re going to do a lot of posing in place. Contrary to what you might think, staying in the same position is difficult. You might work up a sweat, so bring along a lot of water.

(The above tip is extra helpful because senior photographs are taken in the spring/summer).

Prepare for the photograph with any makeup-skin cream that you want, and make sure you shave, but don’t go overboard. Getting a haircut for your senior photo, or trying to get a tan, means getting photographed with a look you’re not entirely comfortable with yet.

senior portrait photography

Find a Good Photographer

All of the advice above won’t help you very much if you don’t find yourself a good photographer. You can have the best pose, outfit, and preparation in the world, but that will all fall apart if the picture is not captured the right way.

Now, a photographer costs money. (How Much Do Senior Photos Cost?) You may be thinking — hey, it’s the 21st century, I have a camera on my phone, everyone has cameras these days. Why can’t I just get my friend/cousin/dad to take the picture?

You can do that, but it will have a severe effect on the quality of the picture. While, yes, everyone has a camera these days, hiring a professional photographer for your high school senior photos means hiring someone who knows how to frame your writing. They’ll be able to account for the light, the wind, and what things will look like after they’ve been edited.

Think of it as a Hollywood film. They’ve got the best actors in the world of all ages; everyone from Robert De Niro down to Millie Bobby Brown. It’s written by some of the best screenwriters in the world and has a world-famous director.

And who’s the cinematographer? Who’s the guy standing behind the camera to make sure all of the shots come out right? Your Dad.

Doesn’t sound too appetizing, does it? Make sure you hire a professional to capture this incredible moment of your life the way it deserves to be captured.

senior photo tips

Picking the Right Senior Photographer

Picking the right photographer for your shoot is the first of our Senior PhotoTips. However, it’s going to mean choosing someone based on more than just how much they charge. Most people your age have never experienced working one-on-one with a professional photographer outside of the 5-minute school photo taken in the gym in front of a backdrop.

Working with a pro for your Senior Photos is going to be a bit different than your school photos. You’ll want to find a pro that makes you feel comfortable and takes the time to explain to you what’s going on. You should be able to view samples of their work to see if you like it and they should be happy to answer any questions you have before you hire them. When you’re talking to the photographer ask yourself how they make you feel. Would you mind spending a few hours hanging out with them while they create your photo story? If the answer is yes, you’ve found your photographer!! But don’t get discouraged if the first photographer you talk to just doesn’t do it for you. You may have to talk with a few pros before making your decision.

Not sure about getting Senior Pictures done outside of school? Find out Why You NEED a Senior Photoshoot!

Getting in the “Mood”

This may seem like a weird Senior Photo Tip for your Session, but it’s actually one of the most important. In fact, most professional photographers are going to get you on this journey without you even realizing it. It’s part of any successful portrait session.

After you’ve reserved your date your professional will most likely give you a packet of info or email you online information to look over with tips and instructions for your portrait session. Basically, they are setting the groundwork for your Story Board. They’ll ask you to fill out an online planning form or a questionnaire. There will be questions about your life, your hobbies, your activities and your goals. Many pros will also ask you for a “Mood Board” as part of this process. You can begin this before you even hire your photographer. Create a Pinterest Board of images that caught your eye so your photographer understands what piques your interest and what types of poses you’re going to be comfortable with during your shoot. Your planning forms and mood board together are going to create your personal storyboard that is going to help your photographer tell your unique story in a way that makes sense to you.

senior photo tips

Wondering about that “Mood Board”? Well, no shock, but we have a blog for that: What is a Mood Board?

Pick the Perfect Location

Senior Photo Tips include.…believe it or not, picking out the right location for your shoot is going to do a lot to help with your storyboard. Your shoot location is your backdrop. It should be a place that reflects who you are, what you do, or somewhere that makes you feel totally relaxed and happy.

Don’t be afraid to think outside the box for your Senior Portrait Shoot Location. If you’re happiest spending hours reading a book in a quiet nook or maybe visit the local library for some photos. If you’re outgoing and spend a lot of time out on the football field cheering or running the ball in, maybe you’ll want to grab some photos on the school field. The best way to choose the perfect location for you is to just take a few moments to think about where your happiest memories are. That’s the location you’ll feel the happiest during your portrait session. The result is that you’ll have a relaxed, genuine smile in your photos and great memories to look back on later.

This may be the most important of our Senior Photo Tips. Because, it’s the one area that most people mess up on for their Senior Portrait Session. Our tendency is to get excited and run out shopping for a brand new outfit to wear. That’s the exact opposite of what you should do. There are many problems that can happen with brand new clothing that you’re not used to.

The biggest concern with new clothing is that it’s not broken in yet. It may look amazing on the store dummy, but how will it feel on you? Remember, how we mentioned feeling comfortable with your photographer? Well, feeling comfortable in what you’re wearing is also very important to the overall success of your photoshoot. Trust me when I say that you won’t get the best results if an itchy tag or tight waistband or squeaky shoes are distracting you from having fun and creating the best memories possible. Another concern is wardrobe malfunction. There’s a much greater risk of showing off more than you intended to if you’re wearing an outfit you’re not used to. That’s why it’s best to purchase an outfit and wear it a few times before deciding to use it in your shoot.

Don’t Be Afraid Of Props

Finally, the last of our Senior Photo Tips. Using props in your Senior Portrait Session is easily one of the best ways to add to your story. You’ve already chosen the perfect photographer, written your storyboard by filling in your planning forms, creating a mood board, picking the best location, AND choosing the perfect outfit. You’re happy and comfortable. Now it’s time to add a little pizazz with some fun props that can help tell your story.

Some of the most popular prop ideas are your graduation cap & gown if available, your sports uniforms and gear, musical instruments, and/or books or artwork that’s a part of who you are. If you love the outdoors you may choose an outdoor location and use the foliage or flowers for props. Maybe you love to cook and can bring a spatula and a chef’s hat. Bookworms will bring their favorite stories. A cheerleader may bring her pom-poms. The goal here is to express yourself with the thing that sets you on fire. What creates passion in your life? Just check out Damian’s shoot. He had a little fun fly fishing.

In conclusion, preparing for senior photos doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With a few simple tips and tricks, you can easily make sure your photos are perfect. From picking out the right clothing and location to knowing how to use lighting and angles to your advantage, now you know what to do! Have fun with it and don’t forget to enjoy the moment. So go ahead, get ready for your senior photos, and show off your unique style! Don’t hesitate – get started today!

Graduating Isn’t Easy

Graduating high school is no easy feat, and it’s certainly a cause for celebration. That’s why we’re listing all the best reasons to take Senior Photos.

The accomplishment of graduating from high school means overcoming the potential negative impacts of fewer employment opportunities and lower income. What’s more, only about 88% of people who attend high school make it to graduation. So, if your student has made it all the way to the end, why not give it the recognition it deserves?

Senior Photos are the perfect way to capture one of the most important moments in your young adult’s life. They might be in a rush to move on to the next phase, but they’ll be grateful to have something to look back on.

Interesting in a little more than just a senior photoshoot? Maybe you’re exploring the idea of becoming a professional portrait photographer? Reach out to talk about our Internship Program! Or better yet, become an EriePics Senior Rep and earn free photo shoots too!

Becoming Who You Will Be

The end of high school means the beginning of the rest of your life. The classes you take, the friends you hold close, and the teachers that inspire you will all become the little pieces of what you grow up to be. The graduation procession is like a metaphor for taking the next steps in your life.

While your student may not realize this now, they’ll be sure to treasure the memories down the road. Graduation portraits will capture them as they are now, giving them something they can always look back on. Just one look at their portrait will bring.

It’s essential that your student not only takes Senior Portraits, but knows How To Prepare for their session. You can find helpful Tips on What To Wear and Where to Take Your Senior Pictures in some of our other blogs.

Graduating high school is an exciting and momentous milestone that should be celebrated! Friends and family members look forward to this day for the duration of a teenager’s high school career. A great way to commemorate this special time in someone’s life is with senior photos! Along with traditional yearbook pictures, senior photography sessions are increasingly popular among graduating seniors.

These beautiful portraits can capture the unique personality and style of each individual student as they transition from high school into adulthood. Senior photo sessions often take place outdoors, such as in a park or natural setting that complements each teen’s individual aesthetic. With vibrant colors, creative poses, and props that represent each student’s interests, these photographs will be cherished memories for years to come.
