8 Great Engagement Photo Tips to Help You be Smile Ready
If you’re wondering how to get ready for Engagement Pictures, you’re in the right place. Our pro team of photographers has put together their list of 8 Best Engagement Photo Tips to help you get ready for your engagement picture session. We’re excited to share these tips with you to get you started on the right path.
#1 Engagement Photo Tip: Wear Comfy Clothes
The most crucial of our Engagement Photo Tips is to be COMFORTABLE. To prepare for engagement photos or really any professional photography session most people rush out to buy a brand new outfit. This is the number one WORST thing you can do for yourself. Imagine your favorite pair of jeans. Now think about your best top. How do these clothes make you feel? Well, if you’re anything like me you feel comfortable, happy, and on top of the world. And you know what? When I feel amazing…I look amazing. That confidence and comfort in an outfit you’re familiar with is going to shine through to your session. On the other hand, wearing an outfit you’re not used to can lead to discomfort and wardrobe failure. Rips, tears, tugging at hem lines, and showing off more than you bargained for all happens when you aren’t familiar with that outfit. After all, when you feel your best you look your best. The couple in this photo understood the assignment. They chose outfits they felt comfortable in and it showed. Both were relaxed and happy during their entire session. Need some guidance? #2 Engagement Photo Tip: Get Gussied Up
In order to really prepare for engagement photos you’ll want to look your best. Not to mention, you’re going to be looking for a Hair & Makeup Artist for your Wedding Day. Why not take your top choice out for a spin for your Engagement Shoot? Surprisingly, a hair and makeup session isn’t all that expensive and it can leave you feeling like a million bucks. As for him, I’d suggest a bit of the old razzle dazzle as well. A fresh haircut, a close shave, and some pampering will make him feel amazing as well. So go ahead and treat yourself to a pamper session with the pro of your choice. You’ll notice how much more confident you feel going into your engagement photography when you’re primped. After all, when you feel your best, you look your best. I know, I already said that, but it bears repeating. Our beautiful bride to be in this photo had professional hair and makeup done before her session. She looked stunning. Because we work alongside one of Erie’s longest standing Wedding Planner we’re able to give you some expert advice on which makeup and hair artists to book for your engagement and wedding. #3 Engagement Photo Tip: Season is the Reason
This is one of the more important of our Engagement Photo Tips. I want you to think about the season you’re taking them in. Most people take their engagement photos 6-12 months before their Wedding Day. That means your session could fall during a variety of seasons. First, choose a season that you both love. The more comfortable you are, the better your pictures will be. Next, think about the holidays, colors, and decorations associated with that season. Choose to wear colors that will pop and fit well with the season you’ve chosen. For example, our couple to the right wore bright red during their Winter Engagement Photos. Their outfits fit in well with the Holiday Decor and the traditions of the season. I love how warm and happy they look. Finally, when considering the season, also think about coordinating with each other. You don’t want to clash with your partner. Notice how this bride chose a solid color while her partner chose plaid. Too many patterns can be eye sore in your professional photos. Not sure when to schedule your session? #4. Choose a Special Spot
Choosing a special location is a key part to prepare for engagement photos. The location you choose sets the mood for your entire session. If you’re not an outdoorsy type of person you won’t feel comfortable and it won’t accurately reflect your personality or relationship. On the other hand, if you both play a sport and meet at a game consider taking your photos on the sports field or arena. If you go to museums together often, take your photos at a local museum you enjoy. We once followed a couple around town who recreated their first date. We started at the restaurant they had dinner at. We ended at their favorite winery where they spent their first dating anniversary. This couple chose their wedding venue for their engagement photos because they spend a lot of time there. Above all, these sessions are most memorable for me, and for them too. Imagine looking back on your engagement session with warm feelings because you tied it to your unique love story that way.
#5. Consider the Time of Day
To really prepare for Engagement Photos you’ll need to talk to your photographer about this next step. You may have an idea of what time of day you’re available or that you’d like to take photos. Many couples love catching the sunset or sunrise. The skies are ablaze with glorious colors during these times. But your photographer understands the lighting and exactly what time shooting should happen. Most people aren’t aware that the sun’s position in the sky changes the lighting for your session a lot. Depending on the mood you want to create, you should choose a time that enhances that mood. Full sun at midday will shine differently on your face than the more slanted rays of sunset. Reach out and we’ll advise you on what time will work best for your engagement session. (Hint: We work alongside our clients to create an “Inspiration Board” that helps us to understand the look you’re going for in your Engagement Photos. This step is huge in helping us to guide you in planning your shoot.)

#6. Connect Before Your Session
This is a crucial step to an amazing photo session that most people ignore outright. In order to prepare for engagement photos you need to connect before the camera is turned on. It’s hard to show your true emotion in front of a camera if you haven’t opened up beforehand. Plan your day to leave at least 30-60 minutes of “US” time before your session. Snuggle up, do your favorite activity, whatever helps you connect. Show up at your session feeling affection, in love, and full of good vibes. Creating a romantic mood right before your engagement photos will allow your love story to shine through. Bonus: Your Engagement Session is actually a great bonding experience for you as well. After all, you’re going to spend an hour or two cuddled up, nose to nose, with huge smiles on your faces. I remember my own engagement session. My favorite part was the stolen kisses during the day. Ahhh….memories.

#7. Loosen Up and Have Fun
Now, you might be thinking…but you just told me to get romantic!! You also want me to loosen up and have fun? Well, isn’t it fun to be in love? Prepare for Engagement Photos by bringing out your fun side together. Tickle each other, wrestle a bit, and just be you. How do you kick back and enjoy each other’s company? Your photographer wants to explore that with you to get genuine images. The couple featured here really brought the fun. He made her laugh the entire time. He even gave her a piggyback ride. Candids of the two of you playing and having fun are an amazing addition to your collection. The beach is an amazing place to take your engagement photos because you can dance and play in the surf. If you’re really adventurous why not take your engagement pictures at an amusement park or arcade? Anyone want to sign up? Anyone? Now I want to go to the arcade……

#8. Let a Pro Handle the Photos
Finally, the most crucial step to an outstanding engagement photo collection is to let a pro handle the hard work for you. Anyone can pick up a camera and hit the shutter. But, a pro handles camera equipment daily. They understand what lenses work best. Also, they understand the lighting, the scenery, and the colors. For instance, want that awesome partially blurred look? Hobbyist photographers may not understand what camera settings to use for that effect. In addition, they have the experience of dozens of previous engagement sessions to draw on. A pro will know how to make you feel comfortable and to create a work of art, instead of just snapping a picture. Our team begins each session by teaching our clients how to be models. Why trust your essential photos to a part time hobbyist? You only get one shot at your engagement & wedding photos.
